When Shishinori first opened its doors on Cambie Street back in the winter of 2014, manager Niki Wang recalls that things got off to a slightly rough start. “At first, it was so slow,” she says. “There were no restaurants around us. No cafés. No pizza. Just us. We didn't really know what to do. So we started having our staff make samples, and giving them to people outside. People tried them, liked them, and suddenly lots of people started coming in.”
Luckily, after those first few months, the gambit paid off. That initial trickle of customers became a torrent, and today Shishinori serves Vancouverites a unique selection of Japanese fusion cuisine, including poke bowls, sashimi and Japanese-style sub sandwiches.
The best part? All of their menu items are made with authentic and healthy ingredients. “We really wanted to make healthy food,” Niki says. “This neighbourhood especially, they like things that are healthy. So the idea was to serve them by making healthy food, that was also Japanese fusion food.”
Come for the sushi; stay for the wow-worthy ice cream parfaits. Shishinori’s multi-layered desserts are served in clear plastic containers – making them an ideal subject for casual food photographers. The Japanese parfaits feature pale green matcha ice cream layered with a wide variety of novel toppings: pastel mochi balls, crunchy cornflakes, bright gummy candies, whipped cream, fresh berries and chocolate wafer straws. With so many different layers, textures and colours, these complex masterpieces are best photographed against a plain white background.
Shishinori is actually a Japanese restaurant with a full food menu, but their dessert menu deserves a mention here – particularly their parfaits. It’s one of the few restaurants out there that not only has great food, but great sweet options as well. If you’re ever looking for a place to get dinner AND dessert, this is the place to go. The parfaits are wonderfully delicious and super cute; the fruits and cookies in the parfaits are cut into assorted shapes, such as hearts and stars.
As delicious as Asian food is, you’d be hard pressed to have a meal without feeling stuffed afterward. Enter Shishinori: this casual eatery serves nutritious brown rice with each dish along with a generous serving of mixed salad. It’s definitely lighter fare, which gives you the perfect excuse to try one of their matcha or black sesame desserts afterward.
