6 reasons your freezer is leaking

If your freezer is leaking water, here are a few solutions you can try to fix the problem yourself before you call in an appliance repair professional.

Pull the freezer away from the wall to try to find the source of the leak. You can look in a few places to see where the water is leaking out:

1. The ice maker is typically the cause of most leaks. Check the ice maker valve in the back of the freezer for signs of seeping water. The ice maker lines may also leak water and are located at the back of your freezer.
2. Check the freezer door for gaps in the seals or the presence of mold. This means cold air is leaking from inside. It could also be leaking cold air around seals that aren’t fitting properly. This will let cold air escape and potentially create mould growth on food. It will also drop the internal freezer temperature causing everything to melt.
3. The freezer drain or hose could also be the source of the problem. It should only drain during the defrost cycle. If you notice it draining at any other time, there is a problem with the unit and it’s something you will have to call an appliance repair professional in to fix.
4. Check to make sure your drip pan isn’t full. Defrost water is routed to the drip pan at the bottom of the freezer. If full, the pan will leak. Make sure to empty the pan during the defrost cycle.
5. The drain hose may have become separated from the hose coupler or it may have a kink or hole in it. The hose may have to be replaced if damaged.
6. There may be dirt or grime clogging the drain line. Try cleaning out the drain line to see if the water flows freely through the line. If you are unable to locate the drain line easily, you may have to call a professional in to remove service panels for access.
