Pro suggestions to fixing creaky stairs

July 28, 2015

That dreaded creak when you set foot on a stair is great for creating tension in horror movies, but annoying for home owners. Here are the necessary steps to rid yourself of those annoying sounds.

Pro suggestions to fixing creaky stairs

Working from under the staircase

It's much easier to deal with a creak if you can get at the stairs from below. Here is how to do it:

  1. Ask someone to walk up and down the stairs, so that you can pinpoint the creaking step or steps.
  2. Cut small blocks from wood off-cuts, two for each squeaky stair. Drill four holes in each block, one pair at right angles to the other.
  3. Use white glue to glue the blocks into the angle between the tread (the step) and riser (the upright) then screw into place.
  4. Take care that your screws are the right length and don't come through the stair.

Working from above the staircase

If you can't get at the stairs from underneath, you can still fix the creak from above the stair.  Here's what you need to do:

  1. You'll need to lift the carpet and be sure you can replace it securely.
  2. Use a chisel to pry the tread away from the top of the riser slightly
  3. Insert some white glue.
  4. Drill clearance holes every 2.5 centimetres (10 inches) along the tread edge and pilot holes into the top of the riser.
  5. Countersink the holes, and screw down the tread.
  6. Fill the holes with wood filler, and smooth with sand paper.

Taking the right steps to repair your stairs will get rid of that annoying creak and stop your home from sounding like an old haunted house.
