Expecting a child? Congratulations! Fortunately, you have a few months ahead of you to get organized. This is an exciting stage full of possibilities, so make the most of this precious time to plan the room’s decor.
The inspiration...
Let your imagination run wild. Search furniture retailers and decorating stores online. Look at everything before making up your mind, and don’t hesitate to ask an interior designer.
Boy, girl or surprise?
Knowing the gender of your baby can serve as a jumping off point when setting up the room.
Here are some colour ideas.
Boys:
- "Earth" colours like sienna, off-white and sand create a fresh and calming effect. Add eco-friendly furnishings to create a rustic, natural atmosphere. You might consider painting a mural on the wall.
- Shades of grey are also very soft and the advantage to a neutral is that it’s easy to co-ordinate with almost any colour. Neutrals give you the flexibility to accent the decor with bright, vivid bedding or accessories.
Girls:
- Pink is often associated with girls. There are many variations and shades to choose from, each more beautiful than the last! The nice thing with a subdued wall colour is that you can add slightly darker paint to the moldings tomake a statement. You can always soften the look with clean, understated white bedding and accessories.
- Pastels offer a spectrum of colours. Palettes and paints range from pale yellows and greens, to sky blue and lilac. They are extremely popular for baby rooms. Be careful not to over-do it with the pastels or your room couldbe just a tad saccharine!
Surprise?
Are you waiting to find out if your baby’s a boy or a girl? No problem! Go for colours that aren’t necessarily gender specific. For example:
- Green and white
- Yellow with a touch of orange
- Vanilla and white
Furniture and accessories
Of course, you can always start with the furniture, and then decide on a colour scheme. It’s really up to you, depending on your priorities and preference.
Accessories are little details that make a nice effect. A lamp, decals (stickers that adhere to the wall and are easily removable), and elements of texture can accent a room sure to fill you with joy.
Your baby probably won’t be too fussy about the decor, so have fun with it!
