How to fix or replace dishwasher seals

December 22, 2014

Dishwasher seals keep water inside your appliance when it's running. A leak could mean the seals need replacing. Fortunately, it's an easy DIY project. To help you get started here's what you should do.

How to fix or replace dishwasher seals

A dishwasher seal is the rubber gasket that keeps water inside your dishwasher when it's on. Over time this seal can come out of place, get stretched out, or become damaged and cause leaks around your dishwasher door. Luckily fixing or replacing the seal is pretty easy. Tp help you get started here's what you should do.

Inspect and repair the seal if necessary

Sometimes replacing the seal isn't necessary. To determine if it is, first make sure the seal isn't just folded over on itself or pulled loose in one place.

  • If the seal appears undamaged, it might be worthwhile trying to fix it.
  • Before you pull it out, look at your old seal. Notice the partly curled ends facing inward. That's how it should look if you replace it. Take a picture with your phone as a reminder.

Next, pull the seal loose. Then, clean it and the channel it fits into of any debris with a paper towel.

  • Thereafter, soak the seal in cold water for a few hours and try refitting it.

If the seal comes loose after soaking it, but is still undamaged, you can try affixing it with silicon glue.

  • Make sure you thoroughly dry any areas to be glued. Do not close the door after gluing. Let the glue dry for 24 hours before using the dishwasher or closing the door.

Replacing a seal

If you've come to the conclusion that you've got to replace the seal, make sure you know your dishwasher's make and model before you go to buy a new one.

  • A new seal can cost from $10 to $50. Note that some models may have fasteners to keep the gasket in place. Some replacement kits may include an adhesive.

After you have the new seal, you should line the gasket back up by starting at the centre. Ensure it lines up under the door latch. To show you where the centre of the gasket is, you will usually find a small white dot.

  • Be careful not to stretch the seal while you're installing it. Once you've made it all the way around the dishwasher tub, make sure the seal ends are of equal length. If not, you're going to have to start all over!

Finally, close the door and make sure the seal seats correctly.

  • The door should close tightly on both sides. Allow the gasket to form a seal by leaving the door closed for a few hours. Next time you use your dishwasher, keep an eye out for leaks.

Repairing or replacing the seal around your dishwasher's door is a simple and easy way to keep your dishwasher running at its best. What's more, it will prevent water and moisture from ruining your floors if a leak should ever occur. It's a good idea to regularly inspect the seal for wear or damage, and fix it before the problem worsens.
