3 superfoods to have in your kitchen

May 6, 2016

Here is our hit list of the three foods to always have in your kitchen, and in your stomach.

3 superfoods to have in your kitchen

1. Red wine and grape juice

Wine is fermented grape juice. White wine is made with grapes that have had their skin removed. The skin contains the highest concentration of antioxidants which give red wine and grape juice their properties. In small doses, alcohol may be good for your health.

Three smart tips

  1. With fish, chicken and eggs, serve a lighter wine like Beaujolais or Pinot Noir. With richer dishes - beef, lamb and stews - serve a Shiraz, Cabernet or Zinfandel.
  2. If you still have the end of the bottle, pour it into an ice cube tray and freeze it. Put the ice cubes in a zipper bag. You can add them to sauces as needed.
  3. To remove pieces of broken cork from a bottle, pour the wine through a coffee filter.

2. Salmon

Salmon makes a wonderful substitute for steak and is one of the best sources of EPA and DHA, two types of omega 3 essential for a healthy heart.

Three smart tips

  1. Cut the filets into two to three centimetre (one inch) thick strips and feed them onto wooden skewers, that had previously been soaked in water for 30 minutes. Coat them with teriyaki sauce and roast them until the flesh is opaque.
  2. To remove the bones, put the filet on an overturned bowl, skin side down. They will stick out and can easily be removed with tweezers.
  3. To move a large filet from the baking sheet to the serving plate easily, slide a flexible chopping board under the salmon.

3. Spinach

Spinach is one of the best sources of folate, an anti-carcinogenic B vitamin, and lutein, a carotenoid that helps prevent macular degeneration. It's a source of calcium, but also contains oxalic acid, which prevents the body from absorbing it.

Three smart tips

  1. To dry the spinach quickly, place a single layer on a plate and cover it with the same type of plate. Hold the plates together vertically above the sink and squeeze them tightly.
  2. To blanch the spinach in no time, remove the stems and put the leaves in a colander in the sink, then sprinkle them with boiling water and follow by running them under cold water.
  3. Add spinach to your soups or stews: pile up ten leaves, roll them up tightly and cut them into thin strips.

In short, make sure you add these three superfoods to your grocery list to help maintain a healthy diet.
