2 sinfully sweet ice cream shakes

Creamsicle shakes

The combination of orange and vanilla is a classic. This shake uses orange-tangerine juice to put a fun twist on the tried-and-true. Look for orange-tangerine juice near the regular orange juice in the refrigerated section.

Preparation time 5 minutes

Serves 2

  • 250 ml (1 c) orange-tangerine juice
  • 250 ml (1 c) vanilla ice cream
  • 250 ml (1 c) orange sherbet
  • 2 ml (1/2 tsp) vanilla extract

Combine the juice, ice cream, sherbet and vanilla in a blender and puree until smooth. Pour into tall glasses and serve.

One more notch!

Take this shake over the top by blending in a ripe banana and a few strawberries, or sprinkle the finished drink with fresh blueberries.

Mocha malteds

For many kids, malted milk is a sweet treat. This grown-up version features malted milk balls to provide a light touch of chocolate, and espresso powder for sophistication and depth. Look for instant espresso powder near the instant coffee in a well-stocked supermarket.

Preparation time 15 minutes

Serves 2

  • 250 ml (1 c) milk
  • 14 large chocolate-covered malted milk balls, divided
  • 15 ml (1 tbsp) chocolate syrup
  • 2 ml (1/2 tsp) instant espresso powder
  • 375 ml (1 1/2 c) vanilla ice cream
  • Sweetened whipped cream

    1. In a blender, combine the milk, 12 of the malted milk balls, the chocolate syrup and espresso powder and purée. Pour the mixture through a wire mesh strainer to remove the chocolate that does not purée.
    2. Return the strained milk mixture to the blender, add the ice cream and blend until creamy.
    3. Pour into two tall glasses and top each with a dollop of whipped cream and a malted milk ball.

Personalize it!

If chocolate is your absolute favourite, substitute chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla and up the espresso powder to three millilitres (3/4 teaspoon).
