Bordering the Bow River in Southeast Calgary opposite Fish Creek Park, McKenzie Meadows Golf Club is situated on the north side of Highway 22X. Trees and thickets hem flat fairways and water hazards. Its 18 river-flat holes are often sunny and always secluded.
An 18-hole course, Lynx Ridge Golf Club in the city’s extreme northwest is challenging, varied and suitable for golfers from good to great. While the front nine (The Ridge) features valley-edge play, a wicked eighth-hole trout pond and plenty of ups and downs, The Meadows back nine is flatter with a big finish. The pleasant clubhouse lounge features a view that encompasses downtown Calgary and the Rockies to the west.
Predominantly tree-lined fairways give Calgary Elks Lodge and Golf Club a measure of seclusion within the city’s northwest. The lodge keeps is golfers well fed and watered. Its clubhouse features a grand 18th-hole view from the Regal Lounge while the Imperial Dining Room above the pro shop overlooks the first. Both rooms feature patio seating. A 20-minute drive west of Calgary, Redwood Meadows skirts the Elbow River near the foothills town of Bragg Creek. Owned and operated by the Tsuu T’ina Nation, this is one fetching golf getaway. The 18-hole course is beautified by mature pines and well-kept water features.
Creek-valley banks, ponds, bluffs and marshy bits frame the undulating, velvety greens of Sirocco Golf Club. The 18-hole course is located a short drive south of the city where the sky is big and the air is fresh. Incorporating the Pine Creek Valley’s namesake watercourse, this is a varied and challenging piece of terrain. Siraia at Sirocco features a particularly good Canadian contemporary cuisine menu.
Ensconced in seriously scenic Fish Creek Park, Blue Devil Golf Club is a course you’ll want to savour. The rolling river-edge terrain of Chaparral Valley and deep bunkers make for seriously enjoyable 18-hole games. For family play, the adjacent Lil Devil course features a pint-sized nine-hole array.
