Craving food across the ocean? Quebec offers the chance to travel without even boarding a plane – and you’ll eat much better food than in the air! Enjoy classic dishes from China and Vietnam – with a detour through Japan, Cambodia and India – when you dine at these great restaurants.
Unsurprisingly, this noodlery on rue Saint-Joseph East has its share of loyal customers. The playful atmosphere emanating from the open kitchen is reflected in the ramen soups and the tsumamis, or “appetizers” in Japanese. It is a favourite of mine for its authenticity and friendly service.
Run by the same owners as Tora-Ya Ramen, this tiny restaurant on 3rd Avenue in Limoilou is mainly dedicated to sushi, with some tsumamis and à la carte dishes. Here, we find the same attention to detail, concern for freshness and impeccable service as at the owner’s brother's restaurant in St. Roch.
In the Saint-Jean-Baptiste neighbourhood, on rue Saint-Jean, lies this Japanese restaurant, where sushi and bentos mix wonderfully. The decor is sleek and private rooms are available, making it a great choice for parties or romantic dates.
Restaurants offering authentic Chinese cuisine are hard to find in Quebec City, which is why Chez Soi la Chine is a definite go-to for Chinese food. Far from typical Canadian Chinese fare, the menu offers its share of classics such as Peking duck, which is served in the cozy atmosphere of this restaurant on rue Sainte-Angèle in Old Quebec.
Sushi fans will be satisfied at this avenue Cartier restaurant, whose reputation is second to none. The fish here is fresh and skillfully prepared, served more simply than in many other sushi restaurants.
Located on rue Saint-Joseph East is Bati Bassak, one of those well-hidden neighbourhood restaurants that, once discovered, will keep you coming back for more. The menu, inspired by Cambodian and Thai cuisine, satisfies many thanks to its variety. The Thai curry, coconut soup and ginger chicken are a must!
Although the number of Indian restaurants in Quebec can be counted on one hand (perhaps two hands at the most), Cari Doré, located at the corner of Cartier and chemin Sainte-Foy, stands out thanks to its refined and attentive service. The butter, kashmiri, madras or vegetarian dishes, wonderfully flavoured, are easy to share, plus you can ask for refills on the naan bread cooked on site.
