Calgary is a city that loves its pizza, but over the last half decade, the number of delicious and creative pizza joints here has exploded. Below are just a few of the best spots in town in which to enjoy premium pizza pies. Image credit: iStock.com/zoranam.
Situated right beside Bonterra, its fancier sister restaurant, Posto may not be big, but it packs a mighty punch. This is thin-crust at its finest, with largely authentic Italian toppings. The 10 pizzas on Posto’s regular menu are all winners, but the potato pizza with crème fraiche, leek and smoked pancetta is a cult favourite for good reason.
Calgary’s original upscale pizza and wine bar, the wait to get into Una (no reservations!) is often long, but it’s worth it. The wine list is impressive, the pizza crusts are light and richly topped, and the starters and salads (especially the now famed kale Caesar) are just as enticing as the main event.
With a giant wood-burning stone oven as the centerpiece of the open kitchen, the staff at Bocce cook up thin-crust pizzas (often with roasted toppings prepared in the same oven) quickly and crisply. The pizza menu is traditionally Italian, featuring a wide selection of both red and white pizzas.
This lively, family-friendly restaurant has a menu packed with share plates that feature traditional Italian ingredients, but it’s hard to resist the simple and flavourful pizzas. Cibo specializes in puffy, thin-crust dough topped with goodies like wild boar bacon, gorgonzola and pear.
Run by the Ricioppo family, who are also behind La Luna Rossa, Azzurri is quickly making a name for itself with its chewy, thin-crust Neapolitan-style pizza made with top-drawer Italian ingredients. The pizza menu is brief (eight regulars plus special features), but even with relatively simple toppings, pizzas like the cinque formaggi and tonna cipolla (yes, that’s with tuna) are bursting with flavour.
This Greek pizza n’ pasta spot has been operating in Calgary since the early ’70s and has earned the loyalty of generations of pizza lovers. The Greek-style pizza is satisfyingly thick and cheesy, and comes with various combinations of meat, veggies and shrimp.
Located in the northwest corner of the Atlantic Avenue Art Block in Inglewood, 500 Cucina serves a full menu of pasta and Italian entrees, but many loyal customers keep coming back just for the pizza. In addition to Italian classics, try out Western twists like The Cowboy with smoked brisket and jalapenos or the Philly with grilled steak and caramelized onions.
An addition to neighbourhood favourite La Dolce Vita Italian Ristorante in Bridgeland, LDV is a popular neighbourhood spot in which to enjoy a drink and a pie. The pizza is authentically Italian – the menus are made up of selections such as margharita (fior di latte cheese, basil, tomato sauce), salciccia (sausage and red pepper) and the inventively delicious Pizza Jeramiah with truffle oil, honey and spicy soppressata.
