Lorraine Hawley grew up on a farm where she learned to bake many of the delicious, fresh items she sells at her Roncesvalles storefront, Mabel’s Bakery and Specialty Foods. The smell of fresh baked goods wafts all around you as soon as you walk through the door, making it hard to resist picking up a still-warm loaf of bread, a flakey croissant, or a gooey cinnamon bun topped with cream cheese icing.
“I always loved baking and cooking and I saw a need in this neighbourhood. There was more of a patisserie, a high-end French bakery, but there weren’t any home-style bakeries,” says Lorraine.
Although the farm is where she initially learned her craft, a baking course at George Brown College in Toronto, along with a business class, sealed the deal on starting her own shop. “I love checking off the box that you’ve accomplished something right then,” says Lorraine. “The daily sense of accomplishment in baking. Everyday something is done.”
A far cry from her former life in telecommunications, Lorraine puts so much of herself into her business, and it’s a difference you can taste.
Mabel’s is a gourmet bakery and takeaway spot dedicated to house-baked bread and homestyle dinner solutions for busy west enders. Mabel’s has cozy counter service and a few tables in the back to enjoy a tart, cupcake or quiche with a coffee. Shoppers will find artisanal breads, cheeses and charcuterie items, with prepared meals like tortiere, quiche and chicken potpie available for takeaway. Breeze in and out of Mabel’s on your next neighbourhood jaunt and find yourself in the capable hands of their warm, helpful staff.
One of the allures of the so-charming Roncesvalles Avenue has to be the aroma of fresh-baked bread wafting out of Mabel’s. It’s one of the main attractions on a street renowned for its kitschy flavour and small town charm. Founded in Toronto in 2008, there are three branches in the city, all of which make artisanal loaves from high quality local and organic ingredients.
This Roncevalles shop is as famous as a bakery in Toronto can get for a brownie. The triple chocolate brownie is generous in size and sweet as sin, making it likely that you’ll want to share it or save part for another sitting.
